Food Banks Canada to Unveil Art Display on Hunger Awareness Day (June 1)
Display created using Canadians’ solutions to the issue of hunger in Canada
On Hunger Awareness Day (June 1), Food Banks Canada will unveil an attention grabbing, thought-provoking art display created from responses received from the Canadian public to the question “What would you do to end hunger in Canada?” The 30ft x 8ft display has been designed to provoke Canadians to think about why hunger exists in Canada and to give them an opportunity to share their solutions for the problem that impacts close to 800,000 Canadians every month. The display will be unveiled at Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto.

Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director, Food Banks Canada will discuss the issue of hunger in Canada today. Teisha James and Theresa Schrader will also speak about the tough choices they have to make each day and the essential assistance food banks have provided. |

Why |
In 2009, close to 800,000 Canadians were assisted by community food banks each month, an increase of 18 per cent from the year before, which is the largest year over year increase on record. Disturbingly 72,000 of these were first time food bank clients and 37 per cent of all 2009 food banks clients were children. |
